چکیده

An analysis of Hox genes reveals that the body of the adorably weird tardigrades is essentially a truncated front end. This illustrates that loss and simplification are a hallmark of the evolution of animal body plans.

Patterns of axial and appendicular movements during aquatic walking in the salamander Siren lacertina.

Most studies of salamander locomotion have focused either on swimming or terrestrial walking, but some salamanders also use limb-based locomotion while submerged under water (aquatic walking). In this study we used video motion analysis to describe the aquatic walking gait of Siren lacertina, an elongate salamander with reduced forelimbs and no hindlimbs. We found that S. lacertina uses a biped...

Post-ovipositional development of the monocled cobra, Naja kaouthia (Serpentes: Elapidae).

External morphological development between oviposition and hatching of the monocled cobra, Naja kaouthia, is described. Ten developmental stages are diagnosed according to nine features. These include fusion of the body wall musculature along the ventral midline, appearance of the endolymphatic ducts, formation of the eyelid, and the appearance of scales on the head and body. Additional observa...

Molecular motors: Walking talking heads

Small tension signals that pass between the two linked heads of kinesin allow the motor protein to coordinate its walking action. Two new studies suggest that certain members of the two other major families of motor proteins, the myosins and dyneins, can do the same thing.

Kinesin: walking, crawling or sliding along?

Kinesins are microtubule-based motor proteins that are involved in cargo transport and mitosis. They are called "motors" because they convert chemical energy to mechanical energy (i.e. force and motion). They use the energy of ATP hydrolysis for their enzymatic processes by walking on microtubules. However, the mechanism underlying their motion has been unclear. Recently, conventional kinesin, ...

Dynamic walking: a step forward?

After a long time as a junior partner in robotics, walking has seen an explosion in interest and achievements in the last 15 years as computational power unimaginable until recently has been brought to bear on its problems. At the same time we have seen advances in other related fields: non-linear dynamics has helped us understand and model the robotic systems that we are studying; zoology has ...
